TGW - Nepal's Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala is clear in his perception as regards the monarchy. What he said today at a program held in the capital does match with what he said on June 14, 2006, in his home town Biratnagar that his party would want to have some space for the monarchy as well.
Giving continuity to his previous stance Koirala said today that he envisioned a Nepali Society that embraces from the lay men to the King as well.
He made these observances at a program to celebrate World Human Rights Day, December 10, organized by the Nepal Human Rights Commission in Lalitpur.
“We have to date advocated a republican setup with federal system of governance, but we are yet to discuss what form of republic and federal structure we want that would be suitable for our country”, Koirala lamented.
In saying so, Koirala was ridiculing the political parties and a section of his own party men who have of late been demanding a republican setup with federal structure in the country prior to the CA polls.
Analysts say that Koirala’s sudden change of heart in favor of monarchy has come just a week after he met Surya Bahadur Thapa- the president of the Janashakti party and a close chum of the Indian establishment.
“What we lack in our leadership is the absence of a clear vision…if we have that the current political impasse will be solved within minutes, Koirala added.
Of late a section of his own party men including his daughter Sujata have been vociferously favoring a constitutional monarchy to continue in the country.
Some NC men have also threatened the party high command that any decision taken by the party against the King and the institution of monarchy would mean a vertical split in the party itself.
