Royalists can never be nationalists: Home Minister

Royalists can never be nationalists: Home Minister

Kantipur Report

CHITWAN, Dec 6 - Home Minister Krishna Prasad Situala has said that the royalists can never be nationalists as they were the “mentors of dictatorship”.
Reacting to Maoist Chairman Prachanda’s Tuesday’s remarks that the parties should forge unity with the “nationalist royalists”, the Home Minister said it was a dangerous mistake to consider the royalists as nationalists.

Speaking at a press meet in Chitwan Thursday morning, Sitaula said that only the parties that are accountable to the people are true nationalists.

He also said that the king who issued death sentence against the people’s leaders like late BP Koirala and Man Mohand Adhikari charging them of being anarchists could never be a nationalist.

The Maoists - long known for their public animosity towards those close to the monarchy – have started advocating a tie-up with the royalists following Prachanda’s remarks. Defending his supremo’s statement, Maoists’ Foreign Department Chief CP Gajurel had said yesterday that the party was in favour of forging an alliance with the nationalists close to the king.

“Where would the nationalists go if the monarchy is abolished? We believe that we should join nationalists into a united front,” Gajurel said.
